Italien

ITALY (Italien)

This vibrant travel poster was designed in 1955 after World War II, when Italy was promoting tourism as a means of economic recovery. The poster is meant to depict the inviting qualities of Italy as a destination. The sun represents its beautiful countryside and scenic views, while the sculpture promotes its rich cultural history.
ENIT, The Italian National Tourist Board, was founded in 1919 with the objective of attracting visitors to Italy from around the globe. This poster was intended for English speaking countries. The Agency of Tourism always tried to show a distinctive Italian style in their posters. Alfredo Lalia (1907-1971) was an Italian artist born in Rome. He graduated from the Technical Institute and studied under his uncle and painter, Vincenzo Lalia. Lalia worked in billboard advertisement for department stores while he participated in state run competitions. In 1943, he was recalled to the army to produce military propaganda. After the war he continued to enter into competitions and became involved with a European Rescue Program, The Italian Institute of Publicity of Rome, and The Italian Advertising Federation.
It measures 24.25" x 38.5" {text and picture from ebay auction}

Bourgogne

This beautiful artwork features local architecture based on The Hospices de Beaune in the city of Beaune in Burgundy.
S.N.C.F., or Societe Nationale Des Chemins De Fer Francais, commissioned a series of posters promoting French tourist destinations that highlight many of the historic and scenic regions of the country. This series spanned almost twenty years and featured the artwork of many famous poster artists, including Dufy, Nathan and Jal to name a few. These posters were produced in many languages, this version is in French.

TWA Travel Poster: Chicago

Fly TWA to Chicago

This iconic image of Chicago’s Miracle Mile, made in 1958, celebrates exotic locations that consumers could easily access with air travel. The unknown artist of this poster depicts the famed lion statue outside of the Art Institute, the Chicago skyline, and a twin prop commercial plane flying above. The poster was meant to be hung on the wall of a travel agency in order to entice passersby.
TWA (Trans World Airlines) was formed in 1924 as Transcontinental & Western Air. The airline’s first route was New York to Los Angeles, soon followed by multiple National routes. The airline expanded to serve Europe, the Middle East and Asia after WWII when the company was under the control of Howard Hughes, owner from 1939 until 1961. Hughes was a dominant force in expanding and promoting the routes flown by his company. The economy was vastly improving, and travels through air for business and pleasure increased too. Posters were a key element to promoting this form of travel and TWA. The airline started a decline in the 1970s that ended up in a third bankruptcy that caused their acquisition by American Airlines in 2001. The airline operated in 132 destinations worldwide and had a fleet size of 190.
It measures 25 x 40 inches. {scan and informations from ebay auction}
